Tahiti I

We left New Zealand and continued making our way around the world. Our route keeps in the Southern Hemisphere with our next destination French Polynesia – the honeymoon portion of this extended honeymoon. There is only one international airport in French Polynesia and all flights land in Papeete on the Island of Tahiti. It is a bit of a scam because all flights land very late at night – after all the connecting flights are finished for the day. So everyone who comes to get away to the many Polynesian Islands ends up spending one or two nights in Tahiti waiting for connecting flights.

We landed at about 11:00 pm and got a cab to the Le Meridian which we booked with cash and points a long time ago since everything here is ridiculously expensive. I knew that, but after all the currency conversions and the long flight, and crossing the international date line (we actually landed the day before we took off in NZ) we started the trip with a small math error as well. We wandered out of the airport terminal and into a taxi. He gave us the price in Polynesian Francs. It turns out that I had looked up a different Franc for conversions so when Danna asked me how much the cab was in dollars I said “around $8” she was like “oh that's not bad at all.” That got me thinking, I knew everything here was bad (in terms of expense) I re-checked the conversion and I was a bit off when the proper calculation ended up being a little more than $40 for a 10 minute cab ride!

But it didn't matter – tomorrow we were off to Bora Bora and that is all we could think of.
