Christchurch I

One of the scary things about booking two round-the-world tickets is that when you are forced to book all your flights so far in advance you just know that something is bound to go wrong. As we were ending our Southeast Asia portion of the trip tragedy struck in Christchurch, NZ. One of the largest earthquakes in the countries history rattled the central business district of the city. This massive quake was only 6 months following a large quake already put the city on a precarious position.

Christchurch was one of the airport destinations on our round the world ticket. There was nothing we could do about it – if the airport was open we were going. We had never really planned on spending much time in the city. We were contemplating going to the Chabad to stock up on some supplies for our South Island tour – but we heard that the Chabad building like may others in downtown Christchurch was completely demolished.

Luckily for us, the airport was not really affected and was open for business. We flew into Christchurch , landing in the early afternoon. Danna got a very kosher cup of coffee in the airport and then we quickly got to our rental car our very jucy rental car (that is the name of the budget rental car company we used here) and headed south to see all the wonders of the South Island. We did not give ourselves a lot of time here so we created an intense 5 day road trip to cover a lot of ground and see as much as possible.
